CHRIS’S EXPERIENCE
Chris, who is a Legend Diving PADI Professional, discusses his experience during the Self Reliant Diver Penida Course
The Self Reliant Diver Penida course is up there with one of my favorite specialty courses I have done. Since the beginning of my diving career, and more so now, I have always wanted to improve on my skillset. After completing my Divemaster and IDC training with Legend Diving, this was the next best step I could take. Since becoming a PADI professional, I believed it was necessary to learn how to dive independently. This course gave me the independence and the additional confidence that I was after. We spent the time needed working on my buoyancy and positioning in order to be comfortable for the ocean sessions. I learned some additional skills, such as back-finning, which helps when taking photographs of non-moving creatures underwater.
I worked closely with Shayne, the course director who is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of diving. Shayne has years of experience, thousands of dives and many stories to go with it. We covered the theory in detail and I felt at ease asking the questions I had on my mind. I learned how to assemble my equipment and practiced the set up until I felt comfortable with the procedure. It made the pool session simpler because of the time spent explaining the theory behind it all.
From the pool to the ocean
Once we had prated enough and I had a thorough knowledge of the theory, we headed out. Based on the conditions, we dove on the North Coast of Nusa Penida. These particular dive sites are notorious for strong drift, which makes it the perfect training ground. I had to show mastery in the performance requirements in order to be certified. Preforming such skills in drift conditions is tough, but this made me feel like a more accomplished diver. The time spent working on the dive plan including my air consumption was impressive. Afterward, I felt as if it heightened my safety awareness.
All in all, I had such an amazing experience, to say the least. It was a great feeling to dive alone after many dives with guests or student divers. Uniquely, I could focus on myself and that felt good. When the time arises, I look forward to teaching others who have 100 dives + this new and exciting skill. I highly recommend this course to the adventurous soul, as it will provide new excitement to your diving life. It is also a great introduction to technical diving if you are looking to head in that direction.
In conclusion, I truly hope that you enjoy the course just as much as I did!
