Conservation Internship Program in Penida

The Legend Diving Marine Environmental Internship offers an exciting opportunity for gap-year students and marine enthusiasts to kickstart their careers. Located in Nusa Penida, Bali—within Indonesia’s stunning Coral Triangle—it combines PADI recreational diving certifications with practical coral conservation, engaging reef ecology, species identification, and survey techniques.

You’re not just gaining knowledge you’re contributing positively: planting coral fragments, tracking reef health, and documenting remarkable species like manta rays, sharks, mola mola, and turtles all while collaborating with several ONG like the Marine Megafauna Foundation and their leading global database.

This program integrates dive training, theoretical classroom learning, and comprehensive fieldwork, preparing you for careers in marine conservation, diving professions, or simply enhancing your love for the ocean. Surrounded by Bali’s rich culture and stunning coastal views, you’ll also play a role in managing local marine protected areas.

Conservation Penida Program Goals

  • Get PADI recreational dive certifications (Professional optional)
  • Cultivate professional skills in diving, conservation, monitoring, and species identification, equipping participants for careers in diving, marine science, or ecotourism.
  • Get theoretical and practical training in coral conservation, restoration & survey methods, marine ecology, and studies of megafauna species.
  • Encourage hands-on experience in coral restoration, survey methods, and species identification, contributing to authentic marine science databases (MMF).
  • Advocate for environmental awareness and sustainable practices while engaging participants in the cultural and natural richness of Nusa Penida.
  • Collaborate with various NGOs to collect essential raw data through multiple initiatives. Support educational campaigns within the local community, raising awareness about environmental concerns, and promote the conservation and protection of biodiversity and marine resources.
  • Monitor the biodiversity, health, and growth of the reef system by conducting surveys on fish, invertebrates, and corals using innovative research equipment.

This program runs for 4, 5, 6 or 8 weeks, including your PADI training from Open Water to Rescue. However, this program is also available if you already hold a diving certification.

If students arrive with prior diving certifications, while waiting for other students to complete Open Water or Advanced courses before beginning Ecology Portion of the program, this student would have to option of conducting a range of the PADI Aware specialties available during this time, or more focus can be placed on gaining diving experience, practicing survey techniques, gaining coral restoration experience – easily tailored to students preference Contact us for more details.
